In the mid-19th century, John Moses Brunswick immigrated to the United States from Switzerland. He worked as an apprentice in Philadelphia, New York City and elsewhere. He was soon elected to the Ohio legislature, and in 1865, he started the Cincinnati Carriage Making Company. Julius Balke, a Cincinnati-based billiards table manufacturer, joined him later. Balke opened St. Louis' first branch in 1854. A second one was later built in Chicago.


Brunswick was also an army contractor. The products of the company were used in both world wars. In 1961, Brunswick acquired Mercury Marine, a company that manufactures boats and radomes for Patriot missiles. In the early 1900s, Brunswick expanded its product line to include toilet seats, refrigerators, and phonographs.
