Badminton Basic Rules

Badminton rules change from one match to another. Badminton World Federation rules (BWF), outline the basics of the sport. They help define certain skills as well as shots. There are many rules that govern the service of the shuttlecock. To win a badminton match, it is important to understand these rules.

A service is the most important shot in a badminton rally. This is a shot which can only be taken once and will give the receiver one point. Official BWF play gives the receiver this right by winning an official rally.

Depending on which game you are playing, there will be different rules and regulations that you must follow. The most obvious is the fact that you can't touch or serve above the net. You cannot serve diagonally across the net. Another rule is that you cannot hit the shuttlecock twice in a row.

Rules of the BWF also state that you shouldn't serve in an incorrect way. You can serve from either the right or left side of the court depending on whether the score is even. If it is not, you can serve from both sides. You cannot serve from any court outside of the white borders.

The ability to serve a birdie, while impressive in skill, is the most important shot of a match. However, you will not have the chance to hit it if it is caught in the net.

A shuttlecock is a half-round, feathered ball that has a featherlike material at its bottom. It is only allowed to be hit once before bouncing to the other side. Moreover, you are only allowed to hit it on the lower side of the birdie, and it will return back down.

A few other important service rules are worth knowing. One of them is that the correct service is when the shuttlecock lands on the service line. Doubles are also subject to the same rules. You will also receive a point for serving in the correct court.

Similar rules can be used to determine whether a shot is a good idea or bad. These rules include the use of the correct racket, a lightweight racquet and being above your waistline while serving.

These are just some of the 30 different rules in badminton you need to be aware. If you don't, your opponent could win by a wide margin.

Badminton's most important rule states that you can only hit the net once to lift the shuttle. Touching the net may also earn you a bonus point.

Another important rule is not to hit the shuttlecock more than once in a row. Ideally, the birdie should have a rounded base. Even though you do not need to be perfect, it is important to know how to return a dish in the correct direction.
