Higgins abused alcohol, drugs, and gambling during his career. Holly Haise, his ex-girlfriend, stabbed Higgins three times in the arm. A long battle with throat cancer complicated his life. He died in 2010, at the age 61. His funeral was held at St Anne's Cathedral Belfast.

Alex "Hurricane" Higgins had a reputation as a reckless and anti hero. His wild personality made him difficult to work alongside. He was actually banned from the popular TV snooker show Pot Black for getting into trouble with the police.

Higgins was frequently out of the country and lived near the edge. Lynn, his wife, cried once after he won a game. Lauren, his child, was taken to the Crucible stage when he won the World Championship. He also threatened to shoot Dennis Taylor, a fellow player in the World Cup. But, the police did not pursue him because there was no evidence he ever hurt anyone.
