Murphy was ranked number 3 in the world at start to the 2008/2009 Season. He fell to number seven during the 2010/2011 campaign. Then in 2012 he reached the final of the UK Championship. He was however defeated by Judd Trump.

Murphy won China's Wuxi Classic. Afterwards, he entered the elite top 16. His next appearance came at the inaugural Northern Ireland Trophy. Despite having the tournament's shortest qualifying round of only five frames, he reached the quarterfinals and beat teenager Luca Brecel.
He went on winning the German Masters, Ruhr Championships, and the inaugural Northern Ireland Trophy. For the entire 2008/2009 season, he was still ranked number 3. During that same season, he reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters and the UK Championship.
